Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery
Genital Restorative Surgery for Female Genital Mutilation / Cutting (FGM/C):
Female Genital Mutilation / circumcision is an ancient tradition of cutting the external genital organs of young girls, it has no health benefits and causes severe physical and psychological harm leading to shock and sometimes death. It is regarded as a crime against humanity, a violation of human rights and a form of Gender Based Violence against women.
The WHO classifies FGM in four types according to extent of excision. Ending FGM globally, requires a change in cultural beliefs, better awareness, education, and improving socio-economic status of practicing families.
Genital restorative surgeries can help FGM victims reclaim their dignity, female body image, self esteem and self confidence. We are pioneers in these restorative surgeries offering FGM victims a chance to improve their holistic physical, psychological and sexual quality of life.
De-infibulation (Pharaonic infibulation - Type III):
Infibulation, is a tradition of covering most of the vaginal orifice with a skin seal, by cutting and suturing the labia minora and majora together on both sides.
De-fibulation (cutting the skin seal) is required before child delivery, vaginal surgery, and sometimes before marriage. Women with Pharaonic circumcision (type III) describe cosmetic and functional improvements after a de-dibulation procedure.
De-fibulation, is a simple procedure performed under local anesthesia, takes about 30 minutes, providing an aesthetic and functional enhancement of the vulva.
Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery (CRS) after FGM/C:
The clitoris is an 8 -12 cm organ, most of it is located within the body, only a small portion (glans) is felt by touch and is amputated during circumcision.
Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery (neo-clitoral glans) has been proven to improve sexual desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm intensity, and pain reduction by removing peri-clitoral fibrosis, thus making the clitoris more sensitive and accessible to stimulation.
This highly specialized surgery together with several non-surgical therapies, improves clitoral blood flow and nerve fiber regeneration. Marked psycho-sexual improvement has also been noted in enhanced self esteem, confidence, partner relationship and quality of life.
Labia Minora Reconstruction after FGM:
We developed a new technique for labia minora reconstruction (LMR), even after complete labia minora amputation from the vulva, for botched overcorrection labia minora plasty and FGM/C victims.
The therapeutic goal, is to achieve aesthetic refinement of the vulva to resemble normal uncut women, enhance genital appearance, improve sexual function and restore normal anatomy of the labia majora,
labia minora, clitoris and clitoral hood.
Clitoral Hood Reconstruction after FGM:
Novel technique for reconstructing a clitoral hood, either by skin or other biological grafts.
Platelet Rich Plasma in Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery:
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection in the clitoral body is our novel technique to re-vitalize a partially amputated clitoris. PRP contains growth factors and has been proven to increase clitoral blood flow, regenerates damaged nerves and stimulate stem cells is the region. PRP clitoral injection improves healing, clitoral sensitivity and enhances sexual function after surgery.
Aim of our new multidisciplinary approach of psycho-sexual, non-surgical and surgical therapies, is to achieve a holistic health benefit for FGM victims, regarding their psychological, physical, sexual and mental health; thus improving confidence and quality of life.
1st Multidisciplinary Center for FGM care in Egypt:
Multidisciplinary approach for management of FGM/C complications in Egypt, Africa and Middle East. This service is available to all FGM victims worldwide suffering from circumcision problems.
The center provides: psychology assessment and care, non-surgical therapies and genital reconstructive surgery.
Full patient medical & personal history is noted along with patient complaint, desires and expectations.
A comprehensive genital exam is mandatory to diagnose the type of FGM/C, extent of cut and draw a personal, individualized treatment plan that suits the patient's diagnosis and expectations. A detailed description of the framework planned is then discussed with the patient, along with our suggested treatment plan which may consist of:
- Psycho-sexual counseling and evaluation
- Non-surgical therapies, that suit the patient's diagnosis
- Surgical treatments (De-fibulation - Clitoral reconstruction - Labia minora reconstruction)
Treatment follow up is implimented to follow patient progress and relieve post operative symptoms. We found during the many years of practice that our multidisciplinary approach provides better patient care, satisfaction and long term results.
We seek to find solutions for all women affected by all kinds of gender based violence.
